4 Steps to Land a UK Warehouse Job in 30 Days With No Experience

Week 3: Pass Warehouse Health & Safety and Basic Numeracy Screenings

Once an agency matches your profile with a depot vacancy, you will be invited to complete mandatory pre-placement testing. These screenings do not measure advanced academic knowledge; they are structured compliance checks designed to confirm that you can safely navigate a live warehouse floor, follow pick lists accurately, and meet statutory safety regulations.

Assessments typically consist of three sections: basic numeracy and literacy, Health and Safety awareness, and a mandatory Drug and Alcohol screening. The numeracy test checks your ability to match 6-to-10 digit SKU and barcode numbers, perform simple addition and subtraction of carton quantities, and read storage aisle coordinates (such as Aisle 12, Bay 04, Shelf C). Accuracy is far more critical than speed during this test, as mispicks lead to costly inventory errors.

What the Entry Assessments Cover

  • Basic Literacy & SKU Matching: Verifying product descriptions, checking quantities on delivery notes, and spotting single-digit discrepancies in barcode sequences.
  • Manual Handling Principles: Understanding the TILE framework (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) and demonstrating safe lifting posture as outlined in Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines.
  • Depot Safety Rules: Identifying pedestrian walkways, understanding forklift exclusion zones, interpreting hazardous material symbols, and locating emergency stops on conveyor systems.
  • Drug & Alcohol Screening: Passing an on-site saliva swab or urine test for prohibited substances; UK logistics facilities operate a strict zero-tolerance policy.

During this week, you must also secure your mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Most employers and agencies require you to supply your own EN ISO 20345 compliant safety boots featuring steel or composite toe caps and midsole penetration protection, though high-visibility vests are generally provided free of charge on site. Passing these checks clears the final administrative barrier, leading directly to your on-site induction slot.
