4-Week Plan to Land a Contact Centre Customer Service Job in the UK

Week 2: Practise Live Telephony Scenarios and Situational Judgement Tests

Passing the pre-interview stage requires mastering online Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs) and automated audio voice assessments. Most major contact centre employers issue an online assessment link within 24 to 48 hours of your application. These assessments do not measure complex technical knowledge; instead, they assess your instinctive balance between customer empathy, policy adherence, and problem-solving speed under pressure.

During Situational Judgement Tests, scenarios typically ask you to choose the most effective and least effective response to an upset or demanding customer. Automated scoring systems look for candidates who prioritise de-escalation over defensiveness without breaching internal company policies. Use the HEAT framework for telephony scenarios: Hear the customer out without interrupting, Empathise with their frustration, Apologise for the inconvenience caused, and Take ownership of the resolution. Never select answers that pass the blame to another department or dismiss customer concerns due to rigid rules.

In addition to text-based SJTs, many campaigns require a 10-minute automated telephony screening where you listen to recorded customer calls and record your verbal responses. Recruiters evaluate vocal clarity, professional tone, pace, and active listening. Practise speaking at a steady rate of approximately 130 to 150 words per minute. Avoid dead air by verbalising your actions calmly, such as saying, I am looking up your account details right now, thank you for bearing with me.

With your assessment skills sharp and your scenario responses rehearsed, you can now begin targeting high-volume cohort intakes across leading contact centre employers.
