Full description

We're looking for a Lead Software Engineer / Technical Lead (Python & Django) for a public sector organisation, based in London, Manchester, Birmingham or Cardiff (hybrid), on an initial 12-month contract, paying between £650 to £720 per day (Inside IR35, Umbrella).

This is a hybrid role with around 40% office attendance, roughly 2 days per week. You'll need to hold or be eligible to obtain SC clearance.

The successful Lead Software Engineer / Technical Lead will design, build and maintain resilient services within a secure Government Digital Service environment. You'll lead across agile squads while staying hands-on, translating user needs into well-architected solutions, and driving engineering standards and quality. You'll also support and enhance live services, ensuring performance, stability and resilience.

You will need proven experience working with the following:

Extensive commercial Python development
Strong hands-on Django delivery
System design and software architecture
Building secure, scalable, test-driven services
Leading engineering teams or agile delivery squads, and mentoring developers
Stakeholder communication across multidisciplinary teams

Government Digital Service (GDS) experience would be beneficial, along with exposure to public sector, government or defence, and an understanding of accessibility and government service standards.
